Well after RMA'ing my hardware (dumb move on my part - I should have
known better), the new hardware did not work.  So after looking at the
debug messages (or lack of) I concluded that I was still running an
old version of the mceusb module.  The lirc install was putting the
.ko file in the wrong spot.  I fixed the configure command line
install to the proper spot and voila it now transmits IR.  Too late to
continue tonight, but at this point all should be workable.  Next step
is to verify the OR commands, then replace with the direct cable and
see if it works.
