Okay, Got back to trying the DVD that started me down this road.
It gets automounted and "ls /media/cdrom0" shows two files: AUDIO_TS
and VIDEO_TS.

Based on the line at timestamp 2009-11-15 06:02:47.748 and the
following line, I'm guessing there's some kind of copy protection or
encryption that defeats the DVD player (internal is currently selected
BTW). Is that the case? Is using something like handbrake my only
option -- ripping it to the harddrive in order to view it?
