It depends on what else your CPU is doing.  In my case moving to VDPAU
freed up the CPU to run more commercial detection processes at a
higher nice level.  I didn't need an expensive card to get these
benefits either.  My card was around $40(US).

If all your CPU is doing is the decoding then it may not be worth it to
you.
