I'm guessing but, I believe ubuntu 9.04 has a newer version of Compiz
that includes a new way for programs to "cover the entire screen".  So
with the new way enabled they disabled the old way (by default).  I
think the long term solution is to add the correct hook into mythtv to
enable the new "cover the entire screen" mode.
