You *can* use MythTV without scheduling data, but then you may as well 
just buy a VCR.  What would be the point?

Depending on where you live (Europe), you may get an acceptable amount 
of information for digital channels over EIT.  In the US (you appear to 
be in Colorado), however, you're lucky if you get more than a couple 
hours of scheduling off EIT data.
