I should point out that, despite my last response and what you've
written, power plants don't exactly use the Carnot cycle. Most use the
Rankine cycle (water is converted into steam and condensed after the
work is done whereas in the Carnot cycle there is no phase change). It's
fairly close to a Carnot engine under certain circumstances, however.
The point about it being the most efficient practical heat engine for
power plants stands (key word being practical).
