[mythtv-users] mythbackend crashing regularly (Ubuntu 8.10, x86_64, ATI radeonhd video)

I've currently got a number of problems with MythTV, but I'll get at
the most troublesome one first.  I'm running the x86_64 version of
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).  I had a lot of trouble with mythbackend
crashing, so I went and added a sources.list entry to point at the
weekly builds from Mythbuntu.org.  Same result.

I find it interesting that I'm getting fairly consistent faults at
instruction pointer location 427578 or 4275c8 (actually, the older
ones may have been with the Ubuntu version, and the latter ones could
be from the Mythbuntu build).  "Error 4" is apparently a fault during
an instruction fetch, which seems to make sense considering  the
address.

I'll try to run memtest86+ soon and double-check the memory on this
system.  I checked it when I got the machine, but that's been several
months.

Does anyone have tips on how to re-build the Mythbuntu.org weekly
packages with debugging symbols enabled? I haven't enabled coredumps
yet -- would they be useful at all from the current stripped binary?

System info:

Intel Q9300 Core2Quad processor @2.5 GHz
Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R motherboard
4GB RAM
pcHDTV HD-3000
pcHDTV HD-5500
ATI Radeon HD 3600 series (I forget the exact model)
