Glad to hear that you got it working, at least my frustrations in 
getting my system to work helped you getting yours working as well.

As far as:
"The MB does have SPDIF out but I'm a little confused on how it would 
put sound out the DVI port - are you saying alsa would do that?"

That will work if you have a connector from the spdif output to the 
input on the video card, since you components are integrated there might 
be a path on the motherboard for doing so.  Like mentioned else where, 
getting spdif to work and having the jumper will in most cases allow 
audio over hdmi, even with the dvi->hdmi cable.
