Well, the fact that there are over 61 unread posts to this list just
since I wrote that email might be part of the problem. :) I tend to
like to just browse the list and then read more of interesting-looking
threads.
So, here are my functional requirements: :)
1. Must be threaded.
2. Must allow rapid browsing of posts - perhaps months at a time.
3. Must allow me to mark posts/threads as read.
4. Must allow multi-select when marking read, and must allow mark-all-read.
5. Browsing has to be fast - I don't want to have to wait for a webpage
load in order to see how many posts a thread has.
It seems like most newsreaders would handle this without much trouble.
My typical workflow is to use a mail client to follow lists where I read
the majority of the posts, and gmane/news to follow lists that I browse.
In any case, I'm not sure why having a gmane archive like the 30,000
other open-source mailing lists is going to cause problems. If spam was
a problem with gmane in the past I can certainly see why it was avoided
at the time - I certainly don't want to see spam on the list. However,
gmane can be configured to be unidirectional so that nobody can post.
