[mythtv-users] overscan problems with nvidia 8400 GS

I have some knowledge of a four year old Sony DA32 CRT TV, which Sony promoted as "It's a future proof TV - you can enjoy high
quality HD programs when you connect an optional HD STB (Set-top-box)" and it has a year to go of its five year warranty.

While the set has various options for configuring a SD image, no where in the manual does it say the image is not displayed at the
full input resolution nor is there any talk of scaling or overscanning HD.

In the manual are numerous references to 720p and 1080i, including a chart that includes showing 1125i total scanning lines and
1080i effective scanning lines at 50/60Hz. Similarly a full 720p / 1080i signal is illustrated to be shown at the full picture (SD
overscanning is illustrated) and it says "An HDTV 16:9 picture is always displayed in "Full" mode", in accord with the illustration
of full pictures being shown.

What is any reasonable consumer supposed to expect the set to do? Is it reasonable to think the set displays full 720p and 1080i at
native resolution?

It has no HDMI inputs, only componentx2. In New Zealand certified Freeview is only allowed to output at SD over component, so with
a certified STB this set cannot receive a HD signal as it has no HDMI input. HDMI was developed by a number of companies, Sony
included and the first standard was released some two years prior to this set.

Sony since have clarified that the TV only has 625 horizontal lines.

So here we have a TV still in warranty, future proofed to display HD that the Freeview standard actually precludes, that cannot
discern the number of lines and there is no way to turn off the overscanning.

While future proofing can not be expected to be infinite, would it seem reasonable to expect the future proofing to at least last
for the warranty period?

I ask, would a consumer be justified in feeling mislead?

Why would they assume the reverse? ie that you'd want to display a
computer output on s-video or scart when you have a vga input?
