I don't see where deleting ~/.mythtv would do anything but brings things to a 
screaching halt.

I'd investigate if the directory ~/.mythtv/themes/* exists, ir if it has 
incorrect permissions for the frontend to read it or wrote to it.

Looks like you may be running the frontend as "chris", which is probably 
wrong. Try running the F/E as root and see what happens, just as a test.

It seems to have found your lirc config file under /home/chris, if other 
configurations are there as well the F/E might have problems finding them.

At least on my system, things are set up in /home/mythtv, not under my 
personal home directory.
