A 2.4Ghz C2D should handle just about anything you're going to throw at 
it.  The problem is that ATI card.  ATI graphics support under Linux is 
relatively horrible.  Drivers exist, but often don't work properly.  If 
Xv is not working, you will struggle to play video at decent resolutions.
