The universality of the HD-PVR is an underappreciated advantage. I
like my HDHomeRun a lot, but it's only for North America right
now. I'm sure those with access to Linux-compatible CAMs
like them too but it's only for (Certain?) Europeans.
Once HD-PVR support is in the mainstream code, we'll be able to
suggest it as the default, first choice for almost any HD or SD
recording situation, such as Japan for the original poster. Given how
jump around I'd suggest even anyone with all-clear QAM cable strongly
consider using a HD-PVR, for example. I am certainly planning on
jumping myself despite having (almost) all-clear FireWire. Only North
American ATSC immediately comes to mind as one with a comparable
solution that does not easily lend itself to the HD-PVR.
