There is no clear-cut answer...
nVidia announcement was that VC-1 decoding was supported on the 9300gs/9400gs

What they didn't say however is that the development team use card
description that refer to a chipset rather than the marketing term
used when you buy the card and is printed on the box.

the 9300gs for example, has been found to be the G98 chipset, which is
found on some 8400gs card.
So "some" 8400gs card will support VC-1 decoding, while some 9400 one won't...

There's no guarantee that the card you're going to buy will have a
supported chipset...

If only nvidia was more clear on this....
