The MySQL user account you use to connect to the MythTV database (and
whose details appear in mysql.txt) is separate to the Linux user
account you run mythbackend/mythfrontend as.

I also think confusion such as this arises (as Brad indicated) because
distro or packaged-based MythTV installations commonly create a
'mythtv' Linux user account, and a 'mythtv' mysql user account. This
need not be the case, you could run mythfrontend/mythbacked as Linux
user account 'foo', and have a mysql user account 'bar' to provide
access to the database. Linux user accounts and mysql user accounts
operate in separate spaces - the former for the local system, the
latter only for mysql.

A MythTV end-user (or a MythTV-centric distro) needs to ensure that
their mysql account(s) has sufficient privileges to use the MythTV
database from any hosts they use, in addition to ensuring that their
system account(s) has permission to use capture
cards/storage/audio/LIRC devices from within mythbackend/mythfrontend.
