I'm sympathetic because configuring MySQL authentication is by far the 
hardest part of getting MythTV set up.  It's complex and most people who 
set up Myth have no experience with relational databases.  At one point 
there was talk of avoiding some of this by embedding more of the 
database stuff in the backend, but I don't think that went anywhere.
