Sorry if the above doesn't read clearly, but it is kind of hard to
correct top-posting so that it reads correctly.  Anyway, did you use
the option in nvidia-settings to save the settings to an xorg.conf
file.  If you are running it as non-root (which you should be), you
can save it as a conf file in your home directory.  Then, as root,
copy that over to replace the original xorg.conf in /etc/X11 (make a
backup first).
