Yep, and may (or may not) draw pretty pictures when it's idle.

Sounds good.  I'd try restarting (both frontend(s) and backend(s)), and 
see if it still happens.  If so, go ahead and try disabling 
gnome-screensaver and if that fixes it, please let us know.
