(With appreciation)
Do you refer to ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.35/README/appendix-h.html where it for example states:
"This release includes support for the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix-like systems (VDPAU) on most GeForce 8 series and
newer add-in cards" or is there somewhere else more authoritative?

It also notes
VdpDecoder
In all cases, VdpDecoder objects solely support 8-bit 4:2:0 streams, and only support writing to VDP_CHROMA_TYPE_420 surfaces.

The exact set of supported VdpDecoderProfile values depends on the hardware model in use.

G84, G86, G92, G94, G96, GT200
These chips support the following VdpDecoderProfile values:

  a.. VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG1, VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG2_SIMPLE, VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG2_MAIN:

    a.. Partial acceleration.

....
G98, MCP77, MCP78, MCP79, MCP7A
These chips support the following VdpDecoderProfile values:

  a.. VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG1, VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG2_SIMPLE, VDP_DECODER_PROFILE_MPEG2_MAIN:

    a.. Complete acceleration.

The appendix in the driver pertaining to VDPAU explains which GPU
cores are supported. Quadro chips are based on the same (slightly
modified) cores. So once again, the list above (which was a quick
summary for the layman) and the the driver appendix listing the cores
stands. No 7xxx or earlier card is supported by VDPAU.
