Try alsamixer again. Make double sure none of the channels you need
(master, pcm) are muted (with the MM at the bottom). If they are use
the arrow keys and the M key to adjust.

Otherwise the usual checks: the speakers are plugged in [1], the
speakers are turned on, the volume on the speakers is not set to 0,
etc


[1] I know this sounds silly but really I nearly destroyed a computer
once, cos it wouldn't connect to the wired network. That is until I
discoverd the ethernet wire wasn't plugged in!
