I'm new to the linux side of things, but I've been grabbing MPEG2ts
off my cable box for about 6 years now. I have Mac OS X, and lots of
flavors of Windblows and I have never came across a plug-in or codec
that will play mpeg2 transport streams for WMP.

How about Windows Media Center? WMC has come on all my versions of
Vista so far, I haven't tried, but I bet you can associate the file
thats downloaded with WMC.
