I don't think this went to the list. Sorry if it is a repeat.

'aplay -l' gives me:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
 Subdevices: 1/1
 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
 Subdevices: 1/1
 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
 Subdevices: 1/1
 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

as expected. alsamixer shows 'iec958' 'iec958 Default' and 'iec958
1'. I have tried every permutation of muted and unmuted for those. I
know that 'iec958 1' is the HDMI port, because I can mute and unmute
it when I have regular audio playing from the HDMI port.
