I changed two things in my setup and now things seem to be working fine:

   i) I ran optimize_mythdb.pl, and
   ii) I was storing /var/lib (which includes both /var/lib/mythtv  
and /var/lib/mysql) on zfs-fuse.  The packages I was using for zfs- 
fuse shut down zfs a little early in the shutdown cycle.  The shutdown  
happened after mythtvbackend and mysql, but still well before more / 
etc/fstab filesystems were unmounted.

I don't know if both actions were required.
