Where I live (Northern NY) you pretty much have to have a generator..We 
loose the power here for days at a time,the longest time I recall, was 
four days..I don't have my generator hooked up to come on automatically 
(too cheap to pay for the switching gear),I can have the generator on 
line in 15 minutes.... I can run the whole house,plus my neighbor's for 
about $15 a day...
