oh and a PS: I usually do this from the sofa with my laptop. ssh in as
the user that runs mythfrontend and then

export DISPLAY=:0 (assuming you don't have some multi-scrren exotic X setup)

then running mplayer will output to your regular screen/tv and the
debug info will appear on your laptop.
