[mythtv-users] Debian/Gnome Screensaver

I ran exec xset -s off &and I get 

mythtv-debian:~# exec xset s off &
[1] 4215
mythtv-debian:~# xset:  unable to open display ""

[1]+  Exit 1                  exec xset s off

Why does my MythTV not treat a video playing under mplayer as a signal
not to start the screensaver?
