Not meaning to pick nits here, but you're wrong on that regard.

They were using H.264 for the video and AC3 for the audio,
transmitting 5.1 audio and MBAFF encoded 1920x1080i video.

And transmitting 5 channels (BBC 1 HD, BBC 2 HD, ITV HD, C4 HD, 5HD)
alongside the standard SD streams at the peak of the trial.

HD over standard DVB-T is not a problem.
