Greg,

  I can't help with most of your problems, but I can tell you how to
update to the latest mythtv-fixes packages under Ubuntu. Look at
www.mythbuntu.org/auto-builds for info on updating to the latest fixes
branch of mythtv. Don't try to use the svn builds from that page.
