There are of course some advantages to the pair of drives. You can run
them in RAID0, or RAID1, or even span them, so they are more flexible
than the single drive. If performance is an issue, a RAID0 array is
faster than the single drive.

The single drive, OTOH, consumes less power, less space and might have
other advantages.

So what you are really saying is that your needs are better fulfilled by
the single drive, but that might not be true for everyone.

There is no right answer for everyone, but the choices are certainly
getting better and cheaper.
