[mythtv-users] chan up/down succeeds, but change directly to a channel fails

Hey, folks.
Long-time mythtv user, here. I'm running 0.21-fixes via SVN, and I
recently rebuilt my setup from scratch. Only one bug remains, but it's a
weird one. Changing channels up or down to an adjacent channel from within
MythTV works, but keying in a specific channel to jump to fails, as does
any scheduled recording requiring a channel change. In both cases I get
the "Error was encountered while displaying video" message.
I'm using an external channel change script which works perfectly from the
commandline -- I can jump to whatever channel I specify, no problem, so the
problem's not with the set-top box nor the channel change script itself.
The issue only happens from within MythTV and trying to change to a
non-adjacent channel. I've spent several hours combing through error logs
and searching lists, but no dice. It's a weird one.
The backend log is pretty sparse, when the failure occurs:

and turning up the verbosity on the frontend log produces, of course, a
deluge of info. Here's the relevant timeslice, with most of what I think
are extraneous lines combed out. I start from livetv, watching channel 21,
attempt to change to channel 29, the channel change fails internally,
mythtv tries and fails to return to channel 21, and then I get the error
message:

At this point it seems like it tries to return to the channel I was playing
before the channel change, but fails there, too:
