Yes. The Cell processor is quite tremendous, they do relativity and
gravity and black holes research on it...

...but all that power is in 6 (8 on the chip, one disabled from factory,
one reserved for the hypervisor) "co-processors" called SPUs which are
very different from the PowerPC core also present in the Cell unit. You
must write specific code if you want to use the SPU.
Running Yellow Dog 6 on the PS3 (a Redhat derivative for the PS3), the
OS feels pretty sluggish, the browser is slow, scripting is slow, "yum
update" takes forever. All that would change if the apps could use the
SPUs, but currently only custom scientific software can do that.
