You shouldn't have too much issue with old ATI cruft, just removing fglrx
from the modules list in /etc is enough I seem to remember. (I've done the
ATI -> nvidia switch myself with no issues... sorry. :) )
How did you do your reinstall? Did you reformat or just install over the
top? If you installed over the top try running fsck over your fs, it might
be something as simple as that.
If it's any help, I use 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.05-pkg1.run'
What theme painter are you using in myth? I've recently had issues with the
OpenGL painter, where the main menu wouldn't appear, going back to Qt has
fixed my problem.
Have you tried using the 32bit version of Mythbuntu? I doubt that would help
but it might be worth a try. (If you're not using over 3G of memory you
don't need the 64bit version.)
As someone else has said the 'nv' is the open source driver, nvidia is the
one to be using if you can.
When you say setup hangs, what about if you run an X server on your laptop
and run the setup with the display exported to that, does it then work ok?
Try 'mythtv-setup -geometry 800x600+10+10' to run it in a window.
(FWIW you can also run the nvidia control panel exported this way too,
although you do need a command line argument I forget otherwise it moans
about it not having the drivers installed.)
Sorry if this is disjointed (and no help.)
Ian
