Ok, so I just tried the shutdown of onboard sound. Now it's even more odd.
The static is there upon boot, it stops when ALSA stops so it obviously has
to do with the ALSA sound system. It's truly very identical to what you'd
get if you turned a radio on to an unturned station. It's not the "tv snow"
sound, it's staticy as an AM/FM radio is staticy as you go out of range of a
station.
So I booted into Myth, exited and went to desktop, pulled up VLC and loaded
up a video, and, over the static, I get valid sound from a recording. Went
to Myth and again, Live TV and Recorded TV I get valid sound over the
static, same as if you were getting, say, weather interference or magnetic
interference when listening to a TV show or radio.
