For the benefit of anyone searching the archives - this failure seems to 
be intermittent; I think it was unrelated to my changes. I haven't 
changed anything more, and it's working now. It may just be that the 
cable signal was flaky that day, and by chance it was the day after I 
screwed around with the MythTV.
