If the machine is being used for transcoding going x86_64 might give you
a minor speed boost. Going from i386 to x86_64 won't give a 50%
increase in performance... works out around 25% depending on what the
app is doing, how it's been written and such.
Personally having run the same Semperon in i386 and x86_64, it
definitely feels snappier and more capable in 64bit mode; but that could
be due to going from Ubuntu to Gentoo.
