Are any of your recordings being stored/accessed via an NFS share?
This could also increase the load if the CPU is waiting for network
I/O.

Has the system started to use any of the swap yet?  Swapping will
definitely increase the load, however, it would also slow the machine
down considerably.

Does the load drop back to zero when you shut off mythbackend and mythfrontend?
