Agreed.  As for power, check 'everything' I've been seconds from a trip 
to the parts store for a PSU before noticing the plug socket was cracked 
(and created a loose connection).  £2.50 for a new socket or £80 for a 
new, decent PSU... it pays to check everything :)

Gut feeling is it's probably the northbridge fur'd up as the OP says it 
only crashes when recording (and thus heavy disk use)... or quietly 
desoldering itself (seen that, been there, gone WTF is wrong??).
