In Thunderbird, sigs are automatically trimmed when replying if the 
first line is '-- ' (dash dash space).  If the footer is also in plain 
text after it it will also be trimmed.  Sometimes the footer is added as 
an attachment.  This may only happen if the original email is a 
multi-part email.  Text with vcard, or pgp, or combined text/plain and 
text/html.
