I haven't heard anything about that. I'm running a 2.6.23 kernel
under Gentoo and am not aware of any built in kernel support. The
following are installed as part of the lirc ebuild:

/lib/modules/2.6.23-gentoo-r8/misc/lirc_dev.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.23-gentoo-r8/misc/lirc_serial.ko

That's got to be really annoying. I've used serial lirc on many
machines over the years and haven't seen anything like
that...definately a strange one. If this has all been on the same
machine, maybe there's a hardware problem with the serial port
itself(??).
