With the latest versions of softmods, the xbox version doesn't matter anymore.
I've found the easiest way to softmod an XBox is to use the "Hot-Swap"
technique. Basically you start the XBox and get it to the dashboard
(Thereby unlocking the hard-drive), then pull the IDE cable and swap
it for an IDE cable on a (Running and waiting with a special linux
distro) PC, which then does the job of patching and unlocking the
system (Generally by installing a patched font file and a new
dashboard), which gives you full FTP access into the XBox to do as you
wish with it.
