I'm not sure false economy is the right term. Another way to look at it is
the dreaded automotive analogy. You'd pay a few hundred dollars to fix the
engine in your car, even though eventually, you'll need to buy an entirely
new one anyway. By replacing hardware now at relatively low prices, they're
extending the utility of their previous software purchase.
