One of the options is to copy myth native files to a file system.  
"It's not just for DVD's any more."

[mythtv at livingroom contrib]$ ./myth_archive_job.pl
USAGE: myth_archive_job.pl --directory RECORDINGDIR --file VIDEOFILE  
<OPTIONS>

    OPTIONS:
             --archivedir ARCHIVEDIR      Force archive to go to  
ARCHIVEDIR


You could set this up as a user job that does not run by default. Then  
when you are browsing programs in Watch Recordings, select a  
recording, hit the right arrow key, select Job Options and select this  
new user job that archives the recording. I imagine people also do  
this with a cron job that automatically runs every night archiving  
things older than x days.
I honestly don't have much experience with this script. I use  
MythArchive now. Your best bet on finding ways to use it is to search  
the archives:
