IR remote support on the Macs is a joke. It's hard-coded to only 
accept the six buttons on the Apple Remote.

Bluetooth support, however, is a good option, IMHO. I don't know 
about the Linux side, but from Mac OS you can hook up any of a number 
of remotes. See this software vendor's site for more info:
