There's an option buried somewhere which sets how much space to
reserve on the disk. I have this set to 100Gb so that the auto-expirer
kicks in early enough to make sure there is enough space for the
"onslaught". It doesn't appear to stop any recordings, even when down
to the last 50Gb (though with slow deletes and multiple volumes that
is hard to measure) but just triggers aggressive auto-expire whenever
disk gets to within 100Gb of being full.

Worth a try.

Are there any other ways to tune auto-expire?
