It's not. I'm seeing identical symptoms with Gnome on Ubuntu Fiesty. 
Though X gets restarted only some of the time when exiting mythfrontend. 
Typically when I go into the settings in mythfrontend.

Perhaps of relevance is that I'm also using an Nvida driver.

I am. It wasn't a problem a few updates back, but perhaps that's 
tickling the bug, so I'll try not running in a window.
