This is one of the things they improved in the 2.6 kernels.  They  
also added a user-tunable knob, /proc/sys/vm/swappiness, so you can  
tweak how aggressively stuff is paged out to make room for cache.   
The range is from 0 to 100, with 0 being the least aggressive (cache  
always loses.)  The default on most distributions seems to be 60.
