I have a TV with the same resolution, similar connection and an Nvidia card. I found that if run nvidia-settings, set the resolution to 1280x720 and then disable autoscaling (which would scale the display up to 1080 - which nvidia-settings thinks is the native resolution) then the display works really well. BUT I have to run nvidia-settings every time I log in to reset the options (just start and quit, not actually change settings). I haven't needed to manually fool around with xorg.conf, other than to add "UseEvents" "True".
