[mythtv-users] FireWire works, but now the hard part- front end crashes

I exchanged my STB for the Motorolla DCH3200, because I needed FireWire
out. Comcast is really good about that.
After reading the wiki here http://mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/FireWire
and playing with the Firewire settings, I found that I had much better
reliability on node 1 then node 0 on the STB. Cool! I am getting a
signal.
So, I noticed channel scanning is not supported for FireWire connections,
and I understand that not all channels are output on the FireWire, so now
begins the tedious part. While watching live TV, I have to change to
every channel and wait a few seconds to see if I get output.
IF there is no output (blank screen), the front end crashes. This is
the error on mythbackend (which stays up):
2007-11-06 00:36:20.382 TVRec(3): Changing from None to WatchingLiveTV
2007-11-06 00:36:20.389 TVRec(3): HW Tuner: 3->3

You may need to manually set the channel on the receiving node.

2007-11-06 00:36:36.531 MythSocket(822c4a8:-1): writeStringList:
Error, socket went unconnected.
I foolishly didn't capture the output of the frontend, I'll be able to
do that tonight.
Is this a known issue? What are others FireWire experiences out there?
Are there other resources out there I can read?
Also, Is there an easier way to scan for known good channels?
This is with knoppmyth R5F27:
