Thanks Steve.  Is this documented anywhere?  I must admit that I
haven't looked hard, but I didn't find anything on the wiki.  I did
find various references, but nothing that really lays out the details.
 I appreciate the help - this sounds pretty much exactly what I'm
looking to do!  Do a lot of people use xrandr?  I'm assuming they're
using a dedicated resolution.
