If you are starting mythbackend via an *init* script, which typically
*does not* have $HOME defined at boot *as Mike has repeatedly stated*,
you need to amend your init script to assign a suitable location to
$HOME. Otherwise, mythbackend/mythfilldatabase will use a $HOME="/"
rather than "/root", or "/home/mythtv" as you see above.

The reason things work from the shell is that you have a correctly
defined $HOME which allows MFDB to run normally.

I thought I'd answered this issue yesterday regarding the grabber
failing and interpretation of the error messages, but I'll try to take
another look later.
